Itinerary

DAY 1:

MIAMI-LIMA, PERU.

Board your flight and arrive in Lima. Check in to your hotel.
Lima. Lima has a rich colonial history as well as being a modern city. Lima was the bastion of Spanish South America from its founding in 1535 until the independence of the South American republics in the early 19th century. Visits include the CATHEDRAL, where the skeleton of Francisco Pizarro is sealed in a wooden coffin, and the SAN FRANCISCO MONASTERY with its eerie burial crypts. (BB daily)

Enjoy city sightseeing and free time.

A morning flight to Puerto Maldonado, then take a motorboat up the Tambopata River to your jungle lodge. Leisure time.
Puerto Maldonado. Puerto Maldonado, the capital of Madre de Dios, also serves as entry to the Amazon Jungle. Embark on a motorboat journey up the Tambopata River. Your river trip provides you a great opportunity to view turtles, caymans, monkeys and the river birdlife, such as capped herons, black skimmers, and kingfishers. Your unique Amazon Jungle lodge is located within the Ese’ Eja Native Indian Community. Enjoy another boat trip followed by a walk to the TRES CHIMBADAS OXBOW LAKE. Enjoy a canoe ride along the lake’s edge to witness giant river otters at play; these are the largest and most endangered of the otter species. Take a stroll around the area surrounding the lake or perhaps take a swim. You can also hike along the trails located nearby. At night, why not participate in an optional night walk to observe the nocturnal wildlife near one of the mammal licks? To get more insight into jungle life, visits include a PARROT CLAY LICK to watch parrots and macaws perch to eat clay; and a NATIVE SLASH AND BURN FARM, once thought to be wasteful but now proven to be a sustainable method. (BB,L,D daily)

Excursion to Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake.

Visits to a parrot clay lick and a native slash and burn farm.

Fly to Cuzco and enjoy an afternoon city tour.
Cuzco. Visit the SANTO DOMINGO MONASTERY, built on the foundations of the Inca Temple of the Sun, the CATHEDRAL and the nearby TEMPLE OF SACSAYHUAMAN, “House of the Sun.” A short drive into the Urubamba Valley leads to the market town of Pisac. Handmade rugs, alpaca sweaters, and jewelry can be bought here at bargain prices. At the other end of the valley is Ollantaytambo. Here some of the finest examples of Inca masonry can be seen. Back in Cuzco, you can sample local cuisine at one of the numerous restaurants. (BB daily, L day 7)

Excursion to Pisac and Ollantaytambo.

Machu Picchu. Board the auto-rail car bound for MACHU PICCHU and cut a path through the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Spend the day exploring this intact fortress with its temple remains, holy houses and mile-long aqueduct. For the hikers, a brisk one-hour walk leads to the Sun Gate, the ancient entrance used by the Incas. A highlight—be sure to wake early and watch the sun rise over Machu Picchu. Spend the morning hiking Huayna Picchu or simply relax in the hotel. Back in Cuzco there’s still time to enjoy the culture and history. Maybe visit the Inca Museum or wander through the artisan district of San Blas. (BB daily, L,D day 8)

Explore Machu Picchu. Return to Cuzco with time to explore.

Fly back to Lima this morning. Hotel rooms are available until your evening departure for the U.S.
Lima. Hotel rooms are available upon arrival until departure for the airport. Founded in 1535, the “City of Kings” was once the capital of the Spanish South American Empire so there is history on almost every corner. Explore the vast Plaza de Armas to view first hand Lima’s colonial heritage. Visit the opulent Gold Museum with its magnificent collection of gold and fascinating artifacts from around the world, including a child’s poncho made entirely of yellow feathers and a skull with a full set of pink quartz teeth. Or stroll along the fashionable boulevards of Miraflores and relax in one of its many sidewalk cafes. (BB)
