Peru is one of the most spectacular countries in the world and its extremes of geography and variety and friendliness of its people is quite astonishing. Scientists have categorized 103 ecological zones on earth, of which Peru has an incredible 83 of them within its borders.
Magnificent Mountains and Inca Cities… The ancient Inca capital of Cusco is one of Peru’s most deservedly famous tourist attractions, where original Inca stonework and Spanish colonial architecture pleasantly mix. It is only 3 hours by train along the beautiful Urubamba River valley to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Of course, if you’re feeling up to it, you can always trek there for 4 days along the Inca Trail.
Cloud Forest Lodges and Rain Forest Trails… Three-fifths of Peru is jungle, divided into the hot, steamy lower Amazon and the so-called high jungle. Peru has protected much of this jungle by designating areas as national parks. The Manu National Park and Tambopata-Candamo Reserve are examples of impressive virgin forests, hosting an enormous variety of fauna and flora.
High Altitude Lakes and Floating Islands… Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake at 3,856 metres (12,725 ft) above sea level. A half hour boat trip from the city of Puno will bring you to the Uros Islands, artificial islands made from totora reeds which actually float.
Dry Deserts and Alien Runways…
Near the town of Nasca on Peru’s west coast, huge geometrical designs have been drawn in the desert which are only visible from the air. The shapes include a monkey, a lizard, a tree and many forms of birds. Explanations for these lines include ritual walkways, an astronomical calendar and extraterrestrial landing sites. Take a flight over the mysterious Nasca lines and see if you can come up with a sensible explanation for them!
Snow Capped Volcanoes and the World’s deepest Canyon…
The city of Arequipa is nestled beneath ‘El Misti’ – an active volcano 5825m above sea level. You can climb to the top for a better view or take a tour to the Colca Canyon where you may get a glimpse of the majestic Andean Condor soaring high above one of the deepest ravines in the world. The nearby Cotohuasi Canyon wins the award for being the deepest.
Trekking, Climbing and Mountain Biking in the Cordillera Blanca…
If you are an outdoor enthusiast then a visit to the beautiful region of the Cordillera Blanca is a must. With 33 peaks over 6000m climbers will be spoiled for choice. There are also some excellent treks and mountain bike routes to keep the non-climbers happy. The city of Huaraz makes an ideal base for exploring the surrounding region
